Alan Ritchson's journey beyond Reacher hits a snag: What does this mean for his future?
Alan Ritchson, the charismatic star of Prime Video's hit series Reacher, has captivated audiences with his portrayal of the towering, no-nonsense Jack Reacher. With three successful seasons under his belt and a fourth on the horizon, Ritchson has undeniably made the role his own. His success in Reacher has opened doors, leading to roles in other projects. But here's where it gets controversial: his recent foray into film hasn't quite mirrored his TV triumph.
Following his role in Fast X, Ritchson starred in the action-comedy Playdate, alongside Kevin James. The film, which sees fathers Brian and Jeff (played by James and Ritchson, respectively) caught in a dangerous situation during a playdate, has received a harsh reception. With a mere 23% on Rotten Tomatoes from 13 reviews and a slightly better, but still 'rotten', audience score of 54%, Playdate marks a low point in Ritchson's film career, even trailing behind scores of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (20%) and Steam (0%).
Can Ritchson bounce back from this setback?
While Playdate may not be the action classic, it's not a career-ender. Ritchson still has Reacher Season 4 to look forward to, which is a guaranteed success. However, it's natural for Ritchson to seek diverse roles to avoid being typecast. Playdate offered a chance to showcase his action skills with a comedic twist, a departure from the serious tone of Reacher.
Fortunately, Ritchson has options. He's reportedly in talks with DC Studios about a potential role in an undisclosed project. He has long been a fan favorite to play Batman, but he's expressed interest in a more 'gritty' character. Given the strong start of the DC Universe with Superman and Peacemaker Season 2, working with James Gunn and his team could be a career booster for Ritchson. This could be his chance to shine in a superhero franchise.
Furthermore, Ritchson has other projects in the pipeline, including the sci-fi action movie War Machine and The Man with the Bag, a Christmas action comedy co-starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Perhaps the most exciting project is a biopic about Navy SEAL Mike Thornton, who was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. The release dates for these films are yet to be announced. Hopefully, these projects will be well-received, and help Ritchson add more memorable roles to his resume.
The Future is Bright, But What's Next?
It's clear that Ritchson is strategically seeking roles outside of Reacher. The series will eventually conclude, and establishing himself in diverse projects is key to his long-term success as an action star. The potential collaboration with DC Studios is particularly exciting. While Batman may not be in the cards, other DC roles could solidify his presence in a popular shared universe.
