Artist's Reaction to Mildura's Sculpture Relocation Campaign: 'Profoundly Silly' (2025)

A bold PR move or a silly stunt? The artist behind the iconic sculpture 'Vault' is not impressed with the recent campaign to relocate his work to Mildura, calling it 'profoundly silly'.

The sculpture, known as the 'Yellow Peril', has a controversial history. It was initially installed in Melbourne's City Square in 1980 and later relocated to its current site in 2002. But here's where it gets controversial: the Mildura Rural City Council has launched a campaign to bring the sculpture to their town, claiming the artist's support.

Ron Robertson-Swann, the artist, has a different story to tell. He told ABC that the campaign was unnecessary and merely a publicity stunt. Robertson-Swann's frustration is evident: "I couldn't stop them... They're happy because they feel they've generated something, but it's hollow." He believes the campaign exposes more stupidity than anything else.

The campaign video, featuring actor Shane Jacobson, portrays a crowd eager to bring the sculpture home to Mildura. But there's a catch: relocating the sculpture would cost over $1 million, an expense Mildura seems unwilling to bear. Robertson-Swann points out the council's lack of commitment, suggesting they invest in more sculptures instead.

The council, however, maintains that Robertson-Swann was initially supportive. They express admiration for his work and invite him and his wife to visit Mildura. But the artist's words suggest otherwise.

The debate extends to the Melbourne City Council, with Lord Mayor Nick Reece refusing to let the sculpture go, while councillor Philip Lui advocates for considering the proposal. Lui's stance raises an intriguing question: should public art be accessible to all, even if it means relocating it?

And this is the part most people miss: the campaign, though controversial, sparks a discussion about the value and accessibility of art. Is it a genuine attempt to promote regional art or a hollow PR stunt? You decide. Share your thoughts below!
