BAIC B30 Launch in South Africa: Pricing, Features, and More (2025)

The launch of the new BAIC B30 in South Africa marks a significant milestone in local automobile manufacturing—but here's where it gets controversial: Is affordable, locally-produced SUVs like this truly the future of South African driving, or are they just filling a niche?

Recently, BAIC officially introduced its latest model, the B30, to the South African market. This compact off-road SUV is positioned below the B40 Plus and comes in four different variants, with prices starting at R519,000. What makes this launch particularly noteworthy is that the B30 will be South Africa’s newest vehicle to be assembled domestically. The vehicle will be assembled from complete knock-down kits at BAIC’s R11-billion manufacturing facility located just outside Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape.

And the excitement doesn’t end there—the company has announced that production is set to begin as early as January next year, promising new job opportunities and local industry growth.

Performance capabilities

The B30 offers two engine options, ensuring a good mix of power and efficiency. The first is a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine, which is available in the first two variants. This engine produces 138 kilowatts and 305 Newton-meters of torque, providing decent performance for a compact SUV. These variants are front-wheel-drive (FWD) and equipped with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, which helps optimize fuel efficiency with an average consumption of around 8.1 liters per 100 kilometers.

The second powertrain option is a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), combining the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine with an electric motor and a dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT). This hybrid lineup includes the Elite and Premium models. The Elite is a front-wheel-drive hybrid that generates an impressive 246 kW and 550 Nm, while the top-tier Premium variant features all-wheel-drive (AWD) and delivers even more power—301 kW and 685 Nm. Naturally, hybrid models are designed to be more environmentally friendly, and they offer better fuel economy: roughly 5.9 liters per 100 km for the FWD version and about 6.5 liters for the AWD flagship.

In terms of off-road capacity, the B30 is reasonably equipped with a ground clearance of 215 mm, an approach angle of 25 degrees, and a departure angle of 30 degrees. The AWD models come with specialized terrain modes such as Standard, Sport, Economy, Snow, Mud, Sand, and Wading, along with an electronic limited-slip differential—features that enhance its capability on rough terrains.

Interior features and technology

The B30 is available in two trim levels—Elite and Premium—and both come with a comprehensive set of features. The base Elite trim includes automatic LED headlights, daytime running LEDs, 18-inch alloy wheels, an electric tailgate, keyless entry and start, a multifunction steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, wireless charging, electric front seats, artificial leather upholstery, a premium audio system with eight speakers, a 10.25-inch digital driver display, and a large 14.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Both trims provide access to a full suite of Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). These include adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, blind spot detection, automatic emergency braking, a 360-degree camera system, parking sensors, hill hold, hill descent control, tire pressure monitoring, traction control, electronic stability control, collision warnings, and traffic jam assistance. The Premium version adds luxurious touches such as a heated leather steering wheel, ambient interior lighting, a 220V power outlet in the boot, heated and ventilated front seats with memory settings, a sunroof, and acoustic glass to improve sound insulation.

Here’s a quick overview of the price points for each variant:

In summary, the BAIC B30 offers a compelling mix of affordability, modern features, and promise of local manufacturing—could this be a game-changer for South Africa’s automotive industry?
