The video, created using ByteDance’s latest AI platform, Seedance 2.0, emerged just days after the platform’s launch. ByteDance, the Chinese tech giant behind TikTok, has once again found itself at the center of a global conversation. While the video’s realism and creativity are undeniably impressive, it’s the how and why behind it that’s raising eyebrows. The Motion Picture Association (MPA) and other industry heavyweights have slammed Seedance 2.0 for its unauthorized use of copyrighted material, including the likenesses and voices of A-list actors. MPA CEO Charles Rivkin didn’t mince words, calling on ByteDance to “immediately cease its infringing activity.” He highlighted the platform’s lack of safeguards against copyright infringement, arguing that it undermines the rights of creators and threatens millions of American jobs.
But this isn’t just about legalities—it’s about the future of creativity itself. Irish filmmaker Ruairi Robinson, who shared the video on X, revealed it was generated from a simple two-line prompt. This ease of use has industry insiders like Rhett Reese, the writer-producer behind hits like Deadpool and Zombieland, sounding the alarm. “It’s likely over for us,” Reese wrote in a chilling response. He predicts a future where anyone with a computer can create movies indistinguishable from Hollywood blockbusters. “My glass half empty view is that Hollywood is about to be revolutionized—or decimated,” he added. And this is the part most people miss: the fear isn’t just about job loss; it’s about the erosion of human creativity and the value of artistic labor.
Reese isn’t alone in his concerns. The 2023 strikes by SAG-AFTRA and the Writers Guild were largely driven by fears of AI encroaching on creative fields. Yet, as SAG-AFTRA reenters contract negotiations with studios, many argue that previous measures haven’t gone far enough.
