That was the reality for WNBA icon Brittney Griner during her harrowing ordeal in Russia. Now, as she prepares to release a documentary that delves into her experience, Griner is issuing a stark warning to Americans: the kind of injustices she faced could very well unfold on U.S. soil.
This isn't an abstract fear. Recent events have brought Griner's concerns into sharp focus. Just this month, two American citizens tragically lost their lives, shot by federal agents in Minneapolis. This incident occurred amidst a significant surge in activity from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and border patrol, a directive reportedly stemming from former United States President Donald Trump. But here's where it gets controversial: Griner believes these events are indicative of a dangerous trajectory for the nation.
"I hope this film can shed some light into what it could be like if we keep letting this happen," Griner shared with The Hollywood Reporter. "Right now, we’re in a very bad place, especially with everything that’s going on in Minnesota and just across our country… I definitely think people will understand a little bit more now and be able to see some comparisons."
Griner acknowledges that speaking out will invite criticism. "I am human, and sometimes it gets me worked up, it makes me want to say something," she explained. "But at the same time, a lot of these people are just looking to get noticed in their mediocre lives, and they need a response from me or whoever they’re attacking to feel important, because they want to get their two seconds of fame. I try to do a good job ignoring it."
And this is the part most people miss: Despite the gravity of her warning, Griner maintains a hopeful outlook. She believes that collective action can still steer the country toward positive change. "I hope people get the sense of, ‘when we come together we can stop what’s going on,’" Griner stated. "We can change what’s going on right now in our country."
Griner is far from alone in her activism. Several prominent athletes have voiced their opposition to ICE and the policies associated with the Trump administration. WNBA star Breanna Stewart recently held a sign that read “Abolish ICE” during player introductions. Similarly, Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr has been vocal, offering strong critiques on recent events and the media's role. Milwaukee Bucks coach Doc Rivers didn't mince words, calling the death of Renee Nicole Good "straight-up murder." Even rising star Victor Wembanyama has refused to remain silent on these pressing issues.
