A significant win for the community and a pause on a controversial development! Plans to construct 45 new homes on a car park in Blackheath have been temporarily halted, thanks to a powerful campaign that garnered support from celebrities like Jude Law and Dominic Cooper. This decision has brought a sigh of relief to many who feared the impact on their beloved village.
Jude Law, who has deep personal ties to Blackheath, having grown up there and attended the local John Ball Primary School, voiced his strong opposition. He argued that the proposed development is not the solution to London's pressing housing crisis. "My junior school was across from the site where this proposed development will take place," he stated, emphasizing his concern that the plan would overburden a cherished historic village rather than address genuine housing needs.
But here's where it gets controversial... The development, proposed by Acorn Property Group, would drastically reduce the car park's capacity from 162 spaces to a mere 17. While the developer claims 21.3% of the new homes would be 'affordable' by habitable room, residents and local campaigners are deeply worried about the detrimental effect on the Blackheath Conservation Area, a designation it proudly holds as one of the capital's earliest.
An open letter, signed by Law, Dominic Cooper, broadcaster Jools Holland, musician Manfred Mann, and actress Sarah Hadland, powerfully articulated their objections. They described the proposed buildings as having an "overbearing, unsympathetic design" that would "destroy rather than improve" the neighborhood, potentially eroding its "unique character."
On Tuesday evening, the Lewisham Council's planning committee made the pivotal decision to defer the proposal. This pause is to allow for the gathering of crucial further information regarding parking provisions, the potential impact on local businesses, and essential access arrangements, including those for emergency services. Councillor James Rathbone acknowledged the "extremely controversial" nature of the application, noting the "huge level of public interest" and the unprecedented number of comments received. He assured the public that the council would thoroughly review all aspects to provide reassurance.
The opposition's open letter paints a stark picture: "We are fortunate to have lived, worked or studied in Blackheath, one of the most historic and beautiful corners of London. But we are deeply concerned by the threat to the harmony, attractiveness, and economy of Blackheath village by Acorn's plans to build three large blocks of dwellings on the station car park." They specifically highlighted the dramatic loss of parking and the uncertainty surrounding the future of the farmers' market, which is slated to be partially relocated to a confined area of the car park. This, they fear, could jeopardize the viability of independent shops in an already struggling village, potentially turning Blackheath into a "ghost village."
And this is the part most people miss... Despite the strong community outcry and the concerns raised by celebrities, a planning officer's report had initially recommended that the local authority approve the plans, subject to 43 conditions. The site in question currently serves as the vibrant hub for a farmers' market every Sunday.
The planning committee is scheduled to reconvene on February 12th at 7 pm to further discuss this matter.
