Dartford Rail Line Closure: What You Need to Know (2026)

A nine-day closure of the Dartford rail line is approaching, and it's time to start planning ahead. This major upgrade to the track, worth £10 million, will impact commuters and travelers alike. The closure, from February 14th to 22nd, coincides with the half-term break, a strategic choice by Network Rail to minimize disruption. With 650 trains passing through Dartford Junction daily, this busy hub in Kent is set to undergo essential maintenance.

Network Rail's Chief Operating Officer for the South East, David Davidson, emphasizes the importance of advance planning. He explains that the work will be carried out during the half-term to reduce the impact on daily commuters, as schools are on holiday. Additionally, the extensive nature of the improvements means that the alternative would have been to perform the work over 30 weekends, which would have been significantly more disruptive.

During the closure, replacement buses will be in operation, connecting Gravesend and Dartford to Crayford, Barnehurst, and Slade Green. Services to London via the Sidcup, Bexleyheath, and Woolwich routes will continue as usual. It's worth noting that preparatory work will commence on February 7th and 8th, with follow-up work scheduled for March 1st and April 5th, all of which will also result in temporary closures.

The junction improvements include the renewal of 'points'—the movable sections of track that enable trains to change direction—and the laying of new track. Station enhancements will feature new tactile paving at Dartford station, the replacement of damaged fencing at Stone Crossing, and the refurbishment of the accessible toilet at Greenhithe. Swanscombe station will undergo a deep clean, while Northfleet will benefit from new LED lighting and additional customer information screens.
