The competition was fierce, but Walshe, representing Templeogue, demonstrated incredible resilience. After a slightly hesitant start, she surged ahead, touching the wall first with a personal best time of 2:03.24. She outswam Denmark's Helena Rosendahl Bach and Italy's Anita Gastaldi, showcasing her exceptional skill and determination.
But the action didn't stop there. Walshe, fueled by her earlier success, quickly returned to the pool for the women's 400m individual medley final. Although she finished seventh in that race with a time of 4:38.51, her performance throughout the week was nothing short of extraordinary.
The entire Irish swimming team had a phenomenal showing, accumulating a remarkable total of seven medals throughout the championships. This success started with Daniel Wiffen, who secured a bronze medal in the men's 400m freestyle final last Tuesday. John Shortt followed suit on Wednesday, dominating the men's 200m backstroke final to claim gold. Then, Wiffen added another gold to his collection on Thursday in the 1500m freestyle.
Evan Bailey also contributed to the medal count, winning bronze in the men's 200m freestyle later that evening. On Saturday, Walshe herself added a silver medal in the 200m individual medley, while Wiffen earned a bronze in the men's 800m freestyle, further solidifying Ireland's strong presence in the competition.
And this is the part most people miss... The Ireland men's team narrowly missed out on the 4x50m medley final, finishing fourth with a time of 1:35.18. Despite this, the overall performance of the Irish team was nothing short of inspiring.
