European Film Awards 2026: Sentimental Value Sweeps the Night, Joachim Trier's Triumph (2026)

Joachim Trier's 'Sentimental Value' Sweeps Up Awards at the 38th European Film Awards

The acclaimed Norwegian director, Joachim Trier, was honored with the Best European Director award for his film 'Sentimental Value' at the prestigious 38th European Film Awards. This marks a significant achievement for the filmmaker, as 'Sentimental Value' also won Best Screenwriter for Eskil Vogt and Joachim Trier, as well as Best European Actor and European Best Actress for Stellan Skarsgård and Renate Reinsve, respectively, and Best Score.

The film's success at the ceremony was not limited to these awards. It also received nominations for Best Film and Director, further solidifying its impact in the European film industry.

The evening's ceremony saw fierce competition from other notable films. Oliver Laxe's Morocco-set drama 'Sirāt', Mascha Schilinski's debut film 'Sound of Falling', and Jafar Panahi's 'It Was Just An Accident' were among the strong contenders. However, 'Sirāt' dominated the craft awards, taking home wins for Best European Production Designer, Best European Sound Design, Best European Editor, Best European Casting Director, and Best European Cinematographer.

Other notable winners included Ugo Bienvenu's 'Arco', which won Best European Animated Feature Film, and 'Fiume o Morte!', directed by Igor Bezinović, which received the Best European Documentary award. The ceremony also recognized the work of Norwegian acting legend Liv Ullmann and Italian director Alice Rohrwacher, who were awarded honorary prizes for their contributions to cinema.

In a powerful opening speech, Iranian director Jafar Panahi addressed the ongoing protests in Iran, calling for the world to stand against the government's brutal crackdown. He emphasized the global impact of violence and the importance of speaking out against it, stating, 'When the truth is crushed in one place, freedom suffocates everywhere. Then no-one is safe. Anywhere in the world, not in Iran, not in Europe, not in America...'

The ceremony celebrated the diverse and talented individuals shaping the European film industry, with 'Sentimental Value' taking center stage as a testament to the power of storytelling and cinematic excellence.
