How AI is Transforming the Film Industry: Insights from Top Filmmakers (2026)

The film industry is at a crossroads, with artificial intelligence (AI) rapidly transforming the way we create and experience entertainment. The question on everyone's mind is: Should filmmakers embrace AI as a competitor or a collaborator?

This intriguing debate was the focus of the recent forum "AI Singularity" hosted by Tencent, one of the internet's giants. Three industry heavyweights - director Li Shaohong, visual artist Tim Yip (a 73rd Academy Award winner for Best Art Direction), and scriptwriter Chen Yu - gathered to share their unique perspectives.

Tim Yip, who brought an alien sculpture to life using AI, described the experience as exhilarating. He explained how AI significantly reduced the time required for such tasks, but he never anticipated AI's influence on his work. Yip emphasized that AI's 'personality' is shaped by humans, as it continues to accumulate resources from us.

Director Li, also the president of the China Film Directors Guild, raised an important concern: Will AI eventually replace actors by generating digital characters? Li directed "Hua Man Zhu" (Isle Abloom), an AIGC short film produced as part of Kuaishou's Keling AI project, which involved eight other renowned directors. Li predicts that future films may have two versions: one with real actors and another with AI-generated characters. However, she believes arthouse cinema, with its complex exploration of humanity, will remain challenging for AI to replicate.

Chen Yu, the screenwriter behind Zhang Yimou's blockbuster "Full River Red," offered a contrasting view. He suggested that AI is already capable of emotional exchange with humans, sometimes acting like a knowledgeable friend or even simulating a lover.

But here's where it gets controversial: Should filmmakers view AI as a threat or an opportunity? And this is the part most people miss - AI's potential to enhance, rather than replace, human creativity.

What's your take on this? Do you think AI will revolutionize the film industry, or is it just a passing trend? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
