Imran Khan's sisters, Aleema Khan, Noreen Niazi, and Dr. Uzma Khan, faced a harrowing experience during their protest outside the Adiala Jail, where their brother, the former Pakistani Prime Minister, has been imprisoned for over two years. The sisters were denied their weekly meeting with Imran Khan, leading to a peaceful protest outside the prison gates.
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party shared distressing images and videos on X, depicting the elderly women in a state of shock and tears after encountering the police. The party alleged that the police violently detained the women, disrupting their peaceful sit-in outside the jail. They emphasized that the weekly court-mandated family visits, as per Imran Khan's prisoner rights, were being misused as a tool of oppression and violence against his family and supporters.
Following their release, the sisters accused the jail authorities of contempt of court for repeatedly preventing them from meeting Imran Khan. Despite their courage, they expressed solidarity with their brother and Pakistan, stating their intention to return to the Adiala Jail.
Aleema Khan specifically mentioned that female police officers had dragged and forcibly removed them, tearing away their shawls. The party has been granted limited access to Imran Khan for the past six months, with visitors often being sent back without a meeting, despite clear court orders.
Sayed Zulfikar Bukhari, a senior party member, strongly condemned the Punjab police's actions, describing them as highly despicable. He emphasized the unjustifiable nature of the police's behavior.
A senior Rawalpindi police officer provided a different perspective, claiming that the protesting sisters were merely removed from the road they were occupying. Imran Khan, who served as Prime Minister from 2018 to 2022, has been imprisoned on corruption charges since May 9, 2023. He faces approximately 150 charges, including corruption and terrorism, which his party claims are politically motivated. The former Prime Minister's ouster in 2022 through a parliamentary no-confidence motion has also been a subject of controversy, with allegations of involvement by Pakistan's powerful army and the US.
