Lights, camera, murder! With the latest installment, "Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery," now streaming on Netflix, it's time to settle the score: which of Benoit Blanc's thrilling cases reigns supreme? I've plunged back into the world of eccentric families, intricate plots, and the ever-so-charming detective Blanc to bring you my definitive ranking. Let's dive in!
3. 'Glass Onion' (2022)
While "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery" is far from a flop, it feels like a case of 'more, but not necessarily better.' The film certainly delivers on the fun, with a stellar cast (Janelle Monáe shines!) and a clever twist on Blanc's invitation. But, for me, it falls slightly behind the other two.
Perhaps it's the slightly sillier tone, the deliberately unlikeable characters, or maybe even a subconscious aversion to anything that reminds me of the COVID pandemic. Whatever the reason, "Glass Onion" takes the bronze in this cinematic showdown.
- Rotten Tomatoes Score: 91%
2. 'Knives Out' (2019)
Now, this is where things get interesting. Rian Johnson's original "Knives Out" is a masterclass in modern mystery-making. It introduced us to the instantly iconic detective persona and delivered a tightly written, captivating story. The film earned critical acclaim, a Best Original Screenplay Oscar nomination, and a massive Netflix deal for two sequels.
Revisiting this Agatha Christie-inspired delight is like revisiting an old friend. From the atmospheric New England setting to the brilliant cast, the captivating score, and the intricate mystery surrounding Harlan Thrombey's death, there's just so much to love. It's a true gem of the genre.
- Rotten Tomatoes Score: 97%
1. 'Wake Up Dead Man' (2025)
If you read my review, you saw this coming! "Wake Up Dead Man" is, in my opinion, the best "Knives Out" movie yet. The competition is fierce, and it's practically neck-and-neck with the first film.
However, for now, I'm giving the edge to "Wake Up Dead Man." The cast is phenomenal, the film is both darker and more grounded than the second installment, and it's also the funniest of the three. Having seen it twice in theaters, I'm leaning towards it being the best of the bunch.
- Rotten Tomatoes Score: 92%
But here's where it gets controversial... Recency bias could be at play, but my gut tells me "Wake Up Dead Man" takes the crown.
So, what do you think? Do you agree with my ranking, or do you have a different favorite? Let me know in the comments! I'm eager to hear your thoughts and opinions on these fantastic films.
