Imagine launching your dream game, only to face the very real possibility of being overshadowed by a competitor's update. That's the tightrope Bungie's Marathon just walked, and they barely made it. Let's dive into why.
Bungie's extraction shooter, Marathon, has a release date slated for March 5th. Now, some leaks have pointed to this date, with credible sources indicating the information is accurate. This timing initially seemed like a potential collision course with Bungie's own Destiny 2 update, Shadow and Order, originally slated for March 3rd. But here's the inside scoop: my sources tell me that Shadow and Order will likely be delayed to avoid competing with Marathon's launch. However, Bungie hasn't officially announced this delay yet, so stay tuned for official confirmation.
But the Destiny 2 update wasn't the only cause for concern. Internally, Bungie has reportedly been anxiously watching the roadmap for ARC Raiders, another prominent player in the extraction shooter genre. For a while, ARC Raiders kept their winter/spring plans tightly under wraps, leaving many wondering what they had in store. This secrecy made Bungie nervous, and rightfully so.
Well, Marathon can breathe a collective sigh of relief. The new ARC Raiders roadmap has been revealed, and it seems Marathon has dodged a bullet.
According to the ARC Raiders roadmap, there isn't a major update or expansion planned for March. February sees the release of Shrouded Sky, a larger update that introduces a new map condition (ARC threat), a player project, a raider deck, an expedition window, and a map update. March, on the other hand, features a new condition (ARC threat), a project, and a "scrappy update" – in other words, not a whole lot of substantial new content. Fast forward to April, and ARC Raiders is planning a significant update with a new map and a new "large" ARC. Eyes emoji.
The underlying fear stems from a previous encounter. During Marathon's last alpha test, ARC Raiders launched its own public test at almost the exact same time. The ARC Raiders test went exceptionally well, making Marathon's alpha look comparatively unfavorable. Ouch.
Even though ARC Raiders isn't dropping a major expansion in March, it still casts a long shadow over Marathon's launch. The big question is: will ARC Raiders boost or hinder Marathon's success?
A potential boost could arise from the growing popularity of the extraction shooter genre. Players who are already invested in extraction shooters might be eager to try a new title, a different flavor, so to speak. This could benefit Marathon.
But here's where it gets controversial... On the flip side, if players remain deeply engaged with ARC Raiders – a game that has demonstrated impressive player retention – they might be hesitant to spend $40 on another extraction shooter. And this is the part most people miss... Marathon is generally geared toward a more hardcore player base than ARC Raiders. This means that convincing ARC Raiders players to switch over might be a difficult task.
Regardless, it's unlikely that Marathon will achieve the same sky-high player counts that ARC Raiders initially saw. However, it's also unlikely to be a complete disaster. On its preorder day, Marathon briefly held the #4 spot for highest-earning game on Steam, so there's clearly interest.
Speaking of roadmaps, it's still unclear when Bungie will release a roadmap for Marathon. They'll likely focus entirely on the launch itself and unveil a more comprehensive plan afterward. I'm particularly interested in seeing their "season" cadence and the frequency with which they introduce new content throughout the year.
What do you think? Will Marathon be able to carve out its own niche in the extraction shooter market, or will it struggle to compete with ARC Raiders' established player base? Do you think the Destiny 2 delay is the right move for Bungie? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!
