Nebraska's Dominant Display Extends Win Streak to 21 Games
In a thrilling Tuesday night showdown, Nebraska's men's basketball team put on a spectacular performance, defeating Oregon by a commanding score of 90-55. This victory not only extended the Cornhuskers' win streak but also showcased their dominance over Big Ten opponents.
But here's where it gets controversial... Nebraska, with an impressive 17-0, 6-0 record, achieved their most lopsided win over a Big Ten team since joining the conference in 2011-12. A remarkable feat, especially considering the Huskers' perfect 6-0 start in conference play, a first since the 1965-66 season.
On the other hand, Oregon, with an 8-9, 1-5 record, is facing its worst 17-game stretch in 15 years and a disappointing start in conference play. The Ducks, plagued by injuries and a lack of consistency, have utilized nine different starting lineups and were without their point guard, Jackson Shelstad, who missed his fourth consecutive game due to an injury.
The stars of the night were Pryce Sandfort and Braden Frager, who combined for an incredible 14 of the Huskers' 17 3-pointers. Their precision from beyond the arc, with a combined 7-for-7 in the first half and 6-for-8 in the second, was a sight to behold. Frager, in particular, thrilled the crowd with three consecutive 3-pointers in the final five minutes, a highlight-reel moment.
Sam Hoiberg also had a career night, recording six steals, five of which came in the first half. His defensive prowess and quick thinking led to a spectacular blow-by layup that had the crowd on their feet. Back-to-back 3s from Frager capped off a 14-2 run, giving Nebraska a comfortable 42-30 lead at halftime, and their lead only grew from there.
And this is the part most people miss... Nebraska's depth and balance were on full display. Wei Lin and Takai Simpkins contributed 14 and 12 points, respectively, while the team's defense forced 16 turnovers and limited Oregon's shooting to just 6-for-23 from 3-point range.
The game also marked a homecoming for Oregon coach Dana Altman, who grew up in Wilber, Nebraska, just 40 miles from Lincoln. Altman, with a coaching record of 327-176 at Creighton in Omaha, returned to his roots for this highly anticipated matchup.
As we look ahead, Oregon will host No. 4 Michigan on Saturday, while Nebraska travels to face Northwestern. Will the Huskers continue their dominant run, or will Michigan and Northwestern pose a challenge? The college basketball world is watching.
