NHS Strike: Phlebotomists' Fight for Fair Pay and Job Security (2026)

A bold stand for fair pay has now become a fight for their careers. The longest strike in NHS history is about to take a new turn, as health workers are offered a one-time payment to resolve the dispute.

In a move that could spark controversy, health chiefs are proposing a discretionary payment to the striking phlebotomists, who have been on strike for over 300 days. These specialists, responsible for drawing blood, walked out of Gloucestershire Royal and Cheltenham General hospitals in March 2025, demanding better pay for their vital role.

Caroline Hayhurst, one of the striking phlebotomists, shared her determination: "We knew what we were fighting for, and we're not backing down."

The hospitals' chief executive, Kevin McNamara, revealed an offer of a new "higher-banded" position, which the union will vote on this week. But here's where it gets controversial: the phlebotomists, currently classified as Band 2, are being offered a Band 3 role, but with a twist.

"The offers are essentially an attempt to push us into healthcare support roles, denying us our identity as phlebotomists," Hayhurst explained.

Unison, the union representing the workers, claims that the responsibilities of the phlebotomists' role warrant a higher band. McNamara, however, points to the national campaign to move healthcare support workers from Band 2 to Band 3, which, he says, does not include phlebotomists.

At a recent meeting, McNamara outlined two offers: one, a joint commission with Unison to review the role and determine its band, and the other, a Band 3 phlebotomy outpatient healthcare support worker role. Those with over two years of service would be moved to the top of the Band 3 salary scale, which is approximately £2,133 more than the current Band 2 wages.

So, will this offer resolve the dispute and bring an end to the longest strike in NHS history? Or is it a controversial move that could backfire? What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments and let's discuss this further!
