A crushing defeat has left the Pakistan team reeling, with head coach Mike Hesson revealing the players' deep disappointment in the dressing room.
"The pain is palpable," Hesson said, referring to Pakistan's 61-run loss to India in the T20 World Cup Group A match. "They know this rivalry means everything to the nation."
India, the defending champions, dominated the match from the get-go. Sent in to bat first on a tricky pitch, they posted a competitive total of 175-7, thanks in large part to Ishan Kishan's brilliant 77. Pakistan, in contrast, could only manage 114, with Jasprit Bumrah's early strikes reducing them to 13-3.
"We were confident coming into this game, having won five straight," Hesson explained. "But today, India outplayed us. The way Kishan batted, he took the game away from us."
And here's where it gets controversial... Hesson defended the decision to bowl first, despite the previous three matches at the R. Premadasa stadium being won by the team batting first. "The ball was spinning a lot initially, and we started well," he said. "But Kishan's performance was exceptional and turned the game in India's favor."
The defeat further highlights Pakistan's poor record against India in World Cups, with their win-loss record now standing at 1-8.
"We have to pick ourselves up quickly," Hesson urged. "We've shown good form leading up to this tournament, and we're confident we can turn it around."
India vice-captain Axar Patel praised Kishan's performance, calling it "one of the gear knocks." Patel highlighted the challenge of batting on a turning wicket, with the ball spinning and moving under the lights.
"Kishan's form has been sensational," Patel said. "He's shown his skill and confidence, scoring all around the ground."
With this win, India progress to the Super Eights stage, while Pakistan must now win their last game against Namibia to stay in contention.
