Is the Boston Red Sox about to make a bold move to bolster their pitching staff? According to a recent report, the Red Sox could be eyeing New York Mets starting pitcher Kodai Senga, who might be on the trading block this offseason.
As reported by Jeff Passan, multiple executives anticipate Senga being traded this winter as the Mets aim to revamp their rotation. This news has sparked considerable buzz among baseball fans and analysts alike.
Senga's debut season in Major League Baseball was nothing short of impressive, earning him an All-Star nod. In 2023, he showcased his talent with 29 starts, boasting an impressive 2.89 ERA and racking up 202 strikeouts. However, 2024 brought a different story, as injuries limited him to just one regular-season game, though he did manage a postseason return. Before the injury, Senga was on fire, leading the league with a 1.47 ERA in 13 starts.
But here's where it gets controversial... After returning from a month-long absence, his performance dipped, with a 4.73 ERA in his subsequent 11 starts, leading the Mets to send him to Triple-A to regain his form.
Despite the injury setbacks, Senga has proven to be a star when healthy. Craig Breslow, the Red Sox's front office, has expressed interest in acquiring a top-tier starter, and Senga presents a high-risk, high-reward opportunity.
He signed a five-year, $75 million deal with the Mets, and he's owed $30 million over the next two seasons, with a conditional $15 million club option for 2028. The option hinges on him avoiding Tommy John surgery or a right elbow injury that sidelines him for over 130 days. If Senga can stay healthy, his contract could become a steal for any team.
The Mets' willingness to trade him is surprising, and the Red Sox could seize this chance. While other pitchers are available, Senga's All-Star caliber and the Mets' apparent desperation make him a compelling target.
