School Knife Incident: 14-Year-Old Arrested After Staff Restrain Him (2026)

A shocking incident unfolded at Haute Vallée secondary school in Jersey, where a 14-year-old boy was taken into custody following an altercation involving a knife. This alarming event raises serious concerns about safety in schools and the measures in place to protect students.

According to reports, the teenager was restrained by school staff until law enforcement arrived on the scene. Although one student sustained what police described as a "very minor injury" to their hand, the overall situation was brought under control swiftly.

In a communication addressed to parents, headteacher Stuart Hughes confirmed that "a very serious incident occurred at the end of lunchtime" on Monday, February 9th, highlighting that staff reacted quickly and decisively to manage the situation. It has been revealed that the boy involved was a former student who had been expelled, and he allegedly returned to the school with the intent to confront another student by accessing the premises through a back gate.

Following this unsettling event, several parents expressed their worries regarding security measures at the school, noting that they had previously raised concerns about the safety of their children. In response to the situation, Haute Vallée School sent out an urgent notification on social media, advising parents against arriving to pick up their children at the usual dismissal time. However, students were eventually permitted to leave shortly thereafter.

Fortunately, no additional injuries were reported, and Jersey Police reassured the community by stating, "everyone is safe," while they continue to collaborate with school staff to provide support for the students affected by the incident.

The school is set to resume regular operations tomorrow, with headteacher Hughes emphasizing that occurrences of this nature are exceedingly rare.

Philip Le Claire, Chair of Governors, expressed his gratitude towards the staff and the school community, commending them for their professionalism and calmness during such a distressing episode. He stated, "I want to express my deep gratitude and pride in the school community. Staff responded with exceptional professionalism, and students remained calm, respectful, and supportive of one another throughout. Their conduct under such difficult circumstances has been exemplary."

Deputy Rob Ward, the Minister for Education and Lifelong Learning, also released a statement acknowledging the seriousness of the incident. He reassured parents and the community that all students and staff are safe, praising the prompt and composed response from school leadership and teaching personnel: "Their actions ensured that the situation was brought under control quickly and safely."

In his letter to parents, headteacher Stuart Hughes elaborated on the events that transpired. He wrote:

"Dear Parents and Carers,

I am writing to inform you about a very serious incident that took place at Haute Vallée School at the end of lunchtime today.

A 14-year-old male was involved in an incident involving a knife in the canteen. Members of staff acted swiftly and decisively to restrain the teenager, and the police arrived imminently. The 14-year-old has been arrested.

I want to reassure you that everyone is safe. One student has sustained a very minor injury to their hand. There are no other reported injuries.

Officers from the States of Jersey Police are currently on site and working closely with us to support students and staff and reviewing CCTV of the incident.

As part of our response, I spoke to all students in an assembly this afternoon, alongside the police. Year Seven students were addressed separately in the theatre to ensure they received appropriate reassurance and support.

All staff were briefed at the end of the school day and wellbeing support for both students and staff is already in place and will continue over the coming days.

I apologise that I was unable to communicate with you sooner; I hope that you understand that our initial priority had to be ensure the safety and wellbeing of students and staff as we managed the situation.

I would like to say how proud I am of our school community. Staff responded swiftly with exceptional professionalism, and students were calm, respectful, and supportive of one another throughout.

As this is a live police investigation, I am unable to comment further at this stage, but I would like to stress that this is an extremely rare incident.

If your child is worried or upset over the coming days, please encourage them to speak with their tutor, Head of Year, or a member of our pastoral team tomorrow.

We will continue to ensure that every young person feels safe and supported. School will be open as normal tomorrow.

Thank you for your understanding. I sincerely appreciate parental response and support in this matter. I wish to stress once again that this is an extremely rare incident in which we are working closely with the States of Jersey Police and Education Department colleagues to further understand the events that occurred and ensure that the safety and wellbeing of student and staff is paramount."
