President Bola Tinubu, in a recent address, revealed his discussions with U.S. and European partners regarding the implementation of state police in Nigeria. He expressed confidence in his administration's ability to enhance security through this initiative. During the 14th National Caucus meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Tinubu highlighted the importance of political reconciliation and internal party cohesion, emphasizing the role of leaders at all levels. He also stressed the need for flexibility and tolerance to ensure stability and progress.
The president drew attention to the Supreme Court's judgment on local government autonomy, urging APC leaders to support its implementation for stronger grassroots governance. Tinubu emphasized that autonomy is futile without adequate funding, advocating for direct allocation of resources to local governments. He urged party leaders to take leadership seriously, noting that local governance is crucial for community stability.
Vice-President Kashim Shettima echoed similar sentiments, warning that maintaining the APC's dominance requires discipline, cohesion, and careful management of internal party democracy. He boasted about the party's growing influence across the six geopolitical zones, particularly in states controlled by new entrants and defectors. Shettima expressed confidence in the APC's ability to retain power, citing examples like the inclusion of influential figures like Sen. Ifeanyi Okowa and Sen. Ovie Omo-Agege.
The address concluded with Shettima reassuring governors who recently joined the APC, inviting them to feel at home in the ruling party. He expressed delight at the increasing interest in joining the party, projecting its continued dominance beyond 2027.
