A tragic Christmas dinner turned deadly: A mother and daughter in Italy lost their lives after consuming a festive meal, sparking a harrowing investigation. The story unfolds in Campobasso, southern Italy, where Antonella Di Ielsi, aged 50, and her 15-year-old daughter, Sara Di Vita, suffered multiple organ failure. Their demise occurred just hours after enjoying a Christmas dinner. But here's where it gets controversial... Investigators suspect the meal was poisoned, possibly laced with rat poison.
Gianni Di Vita, Antonella's husband and Sara's father, was also rushed to the hospital. Authorities have seized various food items from the family's home in Pietracatella, including clams, mussels, cuttlefish, cod, and mushrooms, as part of their investigation.
The plot thickens: The focus has now shifted to the flour used in the meal. Gianni owns a flour mill that was infested with rats until recently. Pest control measures, including traps and poison, were implemented just weeks before the tragedy.
The mother and daughter first fell ill on the afternoon of December 25th. They were initially discharged from the hospital, only to return the following morning and be sent home again. Their condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to their admission to intensive care on December 27th, where they tragically passed away the next day.
Friends of Sara, Giovanna, Donatella, and Giuseppe, shared that Sara was optimistic about her recovery, even making plans for upcoming celebrations. They told La Repubblica: 'She thought the heavy treatment they had given her in the hospital would be enough; she absolutely didn’t think her condition could worsen. ‘So much so that we had planned some parties with friends in the last few days.'
The Christmas meal, which investigators are scrutinizing, was eaten on December 23rd. Intriguingly, the couple's other daughter, who did not partake in the meal, showed no symptoms.
Adding to the complexity, five doctors are under investigation for potential malpractice due to the repeated discharges of the mother and daughter before their deaths.
