Accessibility improvements at Ulverston railway station are uncertain, despite funding for design work.
The Department for Transport announced earlier this month that Ulverston Station in Cumbria would be one of 23 stations to receive detailed step-free access design plans. This news was met with optimism by Liberal Democrat Westmorland and Furness councillor John Murray, who expressed hope for users.
However, there is no guarantee that the design stage will lead to actual construction. Rail Minister Lord Hendy stated that the government's commitment is limited to what they deem affordable and cost-effective for passengers and taxpayers.
The design works for Ulverston, which include plans for a new footbridge and lifts, are expected to be completed by 2027. This project aims to enhance accessibility, but the final decision on whether it will proceed remains uncertain.
