With his win in the African qualifier, Munyua became the first Kenyan to compete in the World Championship, quickly earning the adoration of the crowd.
But here's where it gets controversial... Munyua's victory was not without its fair share of drama. He watched his opponent miss match darts while leading by two sets, and then he pulled off the unthinkable, pocketing the £25,000 prize money for round two participants. And if that wasn't enough, he added to the entertainment by miscounting on two occasions, including a moment where he almost executed a perfect 125-checkout using the bullseye, only to realize he needed 135 points instead.
As for his choice of darts, Munyua opted for a set of Cam Crabtree Mission darts, purchased from a shop in north London just days before the tournament, as his original set had worn out. Ironically, Munyua's win meant he outperformed the very darts' designer, Cam Crabtree, himself!
The Ally Pally Wasp Strikes
In a twist of fate, the notorious Ally Pally wasp, which had been causing a stir throughout the tournament, including during Luke Littler's opening night win, decided to join the action during Munyua's match. Perhaps sensing Munyua's veterinary expertise, the wasp landed on his cheek while he was at the oche, ready to throw his darts. Munyua tried his best to capture the insect, but it proved elusive. "I've seen how it's been interfering with other players," he said. "You need maximum concentration here, so when there's a disturbance, you have to overcome it. I tried to get it to come my way and stay with me."
Women's Journey Comes to an End
Beau Greaves put up an impressive fight in one of the most captivating matches of the first round, but ultimately fell to the No. 33 seed, Daryl Gurney, in a deciding set. Greaves' defeat meant that all five women in the tournament were eliminated at the first hurdle, including Fallon Sherrock, Noa-Lynn van Leuven, Gemma Hayter, and Lisa Ashton.
The match was a tightly contested affair, with both players failing to maintain their best form for extended periods. It was a classic example of setplay darts, with entertaining twists and turns throughout. In the final set, Gurney showcased his experience by checking out 144, his only hundred-plus finish, to break Greaves' throw and secure the victory.
Gurney believes Greaves has the potential to be the first woman to win a major darts tournament. "If there is ever going to be a woman player to win the World Championship or any major, it will be her," he said. "That woman has some cojones."
Japan's Eccentric Hero
Motomu Sakai, a remarkably eccentric player from Japan, quickly became a fan favorite. Sakai, making his debut, strutted around the stage to his walkout song, a tune from an anime about a sorcerer with special powers. He seized every opportunity to stare down the TV cameras and throw passionate fist pumps, which he continued during his post-match interviews after defeating Thibaut Tricole in straight sets.
In a chaotic press conference, Sakai explained his unique approach: "The more I dance, the more my darts fly."
Sakai wasn't the only Japanese player to make an impression. Mitsuhiko Tatsunami, with his iconic goggles, looked like a member of the crowd. He faced the three-time world champion, Michael van Gerwen, and even took the first set against him. However, despite the support from Sakai and the Ally Pally crowd, Tatsunami ultimately fell to Van Gerwen in a 3-1 defeat.
Bloody Hand and a Disqualification
After a defeat to Charlie Manby, Cameron Menzies lost his cool and punched the water table on stage three times, cutting his hand in the process. He walked off apologizing to the crowd, his hand bloodied. Menzies later explained that the emotion of his uncle's recent passing had gotten the better of him.
Fallon Sherrock, Menzies' ex-girlfriend and the first woman to win a match at this tournament in 2019, was also in action. Fans spotted her pretending to shake the water table in anger as she congratulated her opponent, Dave Chisnall, after a straight-sets defeat.
